Each landlord has their own policy but typically, once you have decided to take the apartment, it is important to secure it as soon as possible. You can do this by doing two things:
1. Provide the security deposit (which is usually one month's rent)
2. Fill out an application (one for each person who will be living there)

Once these two items have been received, the apartment is yours as long as your application is approved. Applicants are screened according to credit checks, proof of employment, and previous landlord references. If all these things check out, the apartment is yours.
